The best mode of travel on the glacier is 4WD – pimped out land cruisers with enormous snow tyres designed to run at low pressure (5psi) to charge across the vast flat wilderness. Nothing beats glacier travel at 30km/h in the air-conditioned comfort of a 4x4. See that crevasse? No problem – we’ll just drive over it!

I went to Chamonix recently, in part to learn how alpinism was developing in Europe and how it compared to climbing in New Zealand...
